The Glossary Rosarian

A - General Rosary Terms :

Parts of the Rosary :

  • the Loop : the circular part, representing God in 3 Persons

  • the Introduction : the off-hanging part, including the Crucifix and Center, representing the Person of the Son in 2 Natures

General Elements of the Rosary :

  1. the Crucifix : representing the Mediation of the Son to the Father

  2. the Center or Centerpiece : representing the Mediation of Mary to the Son

  3. PatersDecade Paters, or Our Father Beads

  4. Aves or Hail Mary Beads

  5. Chaplet : 1) a full set of Mysteries ; e.g.: the Joyful and Sorrowful Mysteries are 2 Chaplets. 2) a full round of the physical Loop

  6. Decade : group of 10 beads

  7. Intervals : any space between Paters and Aves

  8. Ave Intervals : any space between Aves

  9. Apex : the farthest point from the Center on the Loop

  10. Apex Decade : the farthest Decade from the Center ; the 3rd on a 5-decade Rosary ; the 4th on a Franciscan Crown ; the 8th on a 15-decade Rosary

  11. Apex Pater : the Pater of the 4th Decade of the Carmelite Rosary ; the farthest Pater from the Center

B - Servite Rosaries :

a. Medal : the Medal traditionally used in place of a Crucifix on most Servite Rosaries

b. Week : group of 7 beads

c. Apex Week : the 4th Week on a 7 Sorrows Rosary

d. Apex Ave : the 4th Ave in the Apex Week ; the Ave farthest from the Center

C - Composite Rosaries :

i. Decade Center : the Centerpiece for the Dominican, Carmelite, and/or Franciscan Cycle in a Composite Rosary

ii. Servite Center : the Centerpiece for the Servite Rosary, across from the Decade Center ( * The Decade Center is also the Apex Ave for the Servite Rosary in a Composite.)

iii. Servite Paters or Week Paters : for use in the Composite Rosaries, distinguished from Decade Paters

iv. Servite Intervals : any space between the Servite Paters and other beads on a Composite Rosary ; distinguished from Decade Intervals
